What happens if the pilgrim damages something on the bike?
01/01/2026As all our pilgrims know, we provide our rental bikes in the best possible condition, so it is very important that, when you receive the bike, you treat it as if it were your own. We always ask for a minimum amount of maintenance if you want the bike to work perfectly throughout the entire Camino:
- Cleaning/Lubrication
Yes, we know that we do not provide oil, mainly because most pilgrims do not know how to use it properly and never clean and dry the bike before lubricating it. In these cases, we prefer that you go to a bike shop and have it done professionally. They will charge around €10–15 for a drivetrain cleaning and adjustment service, but it will be worth it to avoid any kind of breakdown during the Camino.
Breakdowns happen; they are unavoidable, as bikes and people interact. They are not very common, but they can happen, so we would like to remind you of the charges that may apply in the event of any damage during the pilgrimage. The most common ones are:
- MTB Standard: Rear derailleur damage (rear pulley, derailleur hanger and chain) = €80 + €20 + €40 = €140
- MTB Standard: Brake damage = €50
- MTB Premium: Rear derailleur damage (rear pulley, derailleur hanger and chain) = €135 + €20 + €40 = €195
- MTB Premium: Brake damage = €70
- Gravel: Rear derailleur damage (rear pulley, derailleur hanger and chain) = €100 + €50 + €40 = €190
- Gravel: Brake damage = €90
- Gravel: Front derailleur damage = €50
- E-MTB: Rear derailleur damage (rear pulley, derailleur hanger and chain) = €150 + €40 + €50 = €240
- E-MTB: Light damage = €75
- E-MTB: Rear mudguard damage = €110
- E-MTB: Control unit damage = €150
- E-MTB: Assistance cable damage = €90
- E-MTB: Charging port cover damage = €50
- E-MTB: Kickstand damage = €50
- Pannier damage = €50
- Lost helmet = €35
- Lost padlock (or key) = €15
- Lost tool kit = €50
Most gear derailleur damage is caused by incorrect gear management. Instead of shifting progressively when a climb begins, many people change gears suddenly by 4 or 5 gears at once. This is when the derailleur cable becomes over-tensioned, the pulley rubs against the spokes, the derailleur hanger bends and… the derailleur breaks. This type of damage is completely avoidable if the gears are used correctly. Please remember that we do not like having to apply these penalties, but they are all the result of improper use of the equipment we provide.
We hope we will not have to apply any of them.
